Azamara will be back in Australia over the next three cruise seasons.
MEETING OF MINDS
Upmarket, boutique cruise line Azamara Club Cruises, just new to Australian waters, has created brand new tours in Australia and New Zealand to be operated by the legendary luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent. The 75-odd excursions include Azamara’s signature tours, such as its ‘Insider Access’ immersion in local lifestyles in remote Torres Strait islands, ‘Nights and Cool Places’ after sunset tours such as a cocktail crocodile spotting tour near Port Douglas, and ‘AzAmazing Evenings’ of cultural entertainment. If you’ve missed this season’s boat, Azamara will be back in Australia over the next three cruise seasons.

Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic is offering eight itineraries in the Arctic region this year, including two that take in the Svalbard Islands, a high Arctic archipelago between Norway and the North Pole that features fjords, massive icesheets and (perhaps most notably) a dense population of polar bears. A 10-day ‘Land of the Ice Bears’ itinerary has three departures in June that focus on the islands, while a longer 16-day ‘Norway’s Fjords and Arctic Svalbard’ itinerary also travels the Norwegian coastline. Both run during the long days of the midnight sun.

While cruising in Norway has long been about wildlife and landscapes, local company Hurtigruten has launched 12 cultural voyages in 2016 that look at Norwegian art, music and history, with an emphasis on the music of Edvard Grieg. The cruises, round trip from Bergen, take in the same fabulous fjords as regular journeys but include 17 cultural excursions and activities, including a visit to Grieg’s Bergen home and concerts in churches and halls. Passengers will also enjoy lectures on Norwegian culture, guided cathedral tours, art exhibitions and botanical garden tours.

For yet more on an Arctic theme, Ponant is sailing 15 Arctic voyages between July and September 2017 exploring destinations such as Iceland, Greenland, Canada and Norway. The company’s ice-rated luxury expedition ships are equipped with Zodiacs that allow exploration in areas unreachable by large cruise ships. Specialist polar guides and lecturers such as naturalists, historians and geologists accompany cruises. Options include a seven-night round-trip from Reykjavik, a 10-night voyage from Reykjavik to Kangerlussuaq in western Greenland, and a 20-night voyage from Kangerlussauaq to Iqaluit in northern Canada.

Amras Cruises recently started selling its river itineraries to Australians and this year continues to offer a range of river cruises in Europe. They include a 15-day ‘Across Europe’ Amsterdam to Budapest itinerary (or the reverse) with eight departures starting from 28 April, and an eight-day ‘Tulip Serenade’ through the Netherlands and Belgium timed for the tulip season, with five sailings starting from 26 March. The cruise line uses Austrian-owned Amadeus ships, on which panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows in every cabin allow for plenty of outlooks onto the passing scenery.
