Adam Eckermann took two hat-tricks in the one innings.IN his first game back from a severe injury suffered in a football match four months ago, former Port City Leagues Magpie Adam Eckermann took not one, but two hat-tricks.
Playing for Mypolonga in the Murray Towns Cricket Association A-grade competition in South Australia Eckermann rattled through the middle and lower order of opponents Meningie.
“It was the first game of sport I’d played in because in my last game of footy I had a four-centimetre tear in my pec so it was my first activity since then,” he said.
“I’d bowled a bit in the nets and then pulled up really sore after it and then the captain threw me the ball.”
When he answered the phone at Duttons Automotive in Murray Bridge he wouldn’t have expected a phone call from Port Macquarie.
“I didn’t think you would do interstate stories,” he laughed.
The medium pacer’s first hat-trick included the fourth, fifth and sixth wickets, and then seventh, eighth and ninth wickets for his second hat trick.
His final figures of 6-27 off 10 overs could have been even better when you consider he bowled more than two overs worth of wides.
“I bowled 13 wides and then all of a sudden I bowled three good ones,” he said.
“The first hat-trick ball was a rank full toss which he hit straight up in the air … I was a bit erratic.”
A few overs after the first hat-trick Eckermann was at it again with three full, swinging deliveries forcing the umpire to lift his finger.
“The first wicket was full, at the stumps and I got him LBW, the second was bowled and the third was a left-hander and I hit him on the toe in front of the stumps – it was a much better hat-trick than the first one,” he said.
“I was talking to the umpire after the game and he said if he didn’t have to give it out he wouldn’t have, so that’s how plumb it was.”
The phenomenal effort was put down to “being one of those things”.
“I’ll never take another hat-trick again,” he said.
He was looking forward to dining out on his success for another week.
“Everyone has the bye this weekend so I can dine out on it for a bit more. I’ll probably take 0-60 off 10 overs next time.”
