FINAL CHAPTER: Luke Parisotto has been fixing electronics for 40 years and has finally decided that enough’s enough. Picture: Riley Krause.
If you’ve ever had a busted vacuum cleaner or a coffee pot that just won’twork, chances are you’ve had it fixed by “Lucky” Luke Parisotto.
Now after 40 years, he’s shutting his office above Betta Electrical and calling it a day.
He’s one of the last electronics repairmen going around, as the profession becomes a dying breed.
He didn’t want anyfanfare or recognition.
He just wantedto do his job up until his last day at the end of this month.
“People will stillprobably find me if they want something fixed,” he joked.
“I just want to get out, no big fuss.
“Some days I’m just glad to get out of here.”
The times they are a changin’ with people less inclined to get something fixed, often opting to buy brand new.
“Nowadays it’s only probably the bigger vacuum cleaners and the coffee makers that areworth fixing,” he said.
“A lot of companies don’t even supply parts, some components but not many.
“Back in the old days you could buy all the bits and pieces and repair the thing, now you buy a complete assembly or you don’t buy anything, just throw it away if it doesn’t work and get a new one.”
He still has some uncollected items from as far back as 20 years ago, but he won’t be holding on to them as keepsakes.
“I tell you the rubbish bin will be getting a good feed,” he said.
“You get the odd one that stumps you though, especially some of the coffee makers and the bigger vacuum cleaners.
“If you get sick of it, put it aside and come back tomorrow with a fresh idea.”
Ken Wells from Betta Electrical said he would be sorely missed.
“We’ll miss him too because he does little jobs for us,” he said.
“Everyone brings stuff into Luke, be it vacuum cleaners, kettles or toasters, they’ve been doing it for a long time.
“There will be a lot of people coming in the next month asking where Luke is.
“Everyone will miss him, he’s part of the family around here.”
